Researcher Spotlight: Dr. Nancy Rosenthal

The dental industry is constantly evolving, driven by continuous advancements in technology, research, and clinical practices. Staying ahead of these changes is crucial for dental professionals committed to providing the best care possible. At the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN), we explore the latest trends, innovations, and insights shaping the future of dentistry through comprehensive research and studies—none of which would be possible without our researchers and members.

In our ongoing effort to highlight the brilliant minds shaping the future of dental care, we’re happy to bring you an exclusive interview with Dr. Nancy Rosenthal. As a prominent researcher with the National Dental PRBN, she has been at the forefront of several studies that aim to bridge the gap between dental research and clinical practice.

Tell me about your background and current position.

I am a general dentist based in a suburb of Philadelphia. I am the sole owner of my practice. Additionally, I have experience teaching at both the University of Pennsylvania Dental School and Temple Dental School, specifically in preclinical and clinical settings. Furthermore, I recently served as the immediate past president of the Pennsylvania Dental Association.

What made you decide to join the National Dental PBRN?

I was encouraged to join the National Dental PBRN by peers who found it rewarding. The exceptional support team further solidified my decision.

Can you elaborate more on your teaching experience at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School and Temple Dental School? How did that experience influence your decision to join the National Dental PBRN?

Teaching at dental schools provided limited research opportunities due to time constraints and lack of administrative support. Joining the Network provided me with a pathway to participate independently and engage in scholarly research beyond the confines of the university.

What research were you previously involved in before joining, and how has this membership helped you improve your skills?

Before joining the Network, I had been a member of the Salus University Institutional Review Board (IRB) since 2004. Participating in research through the National Dental PBRN has enhanced my understanding of research protocols and bolstered my confidence in providing valuable input to the IRB.

How do you balance your responsibilities as a practicing dentist and your involvement in research?

Each organization complements the other, making me better at both. Compliance with research protocols is reinforced when evaluating other studies, strengthening my abilities as a dentist and researcher.

In what ways do you believe your participation in the National Dental PBRN has contributed to advancements in dental treatment modalities?

Participating in National Dental PBRN keeps me informed and ensures I can communicate with patients about the latest standards and best practices in dental care.

Can you provide examples of how networking opportunities within the National Dental PBRN have impacted your research endeavors?

Networking opportunities facilitated by National Dental PBRN have allowed me to attend research-based dental meetings, keeping me updated on the latest developments and fostering collaboration with other professionals in the field.

How has the organization expanded or enhanced your research capabilities?

This membership has broadened my research horizons, allowing me to engage in studies beyond what is feasible in a private practice setting alone. Without the National Dental PBRN, conducting research would have been significantly more challenging, given the limited resources and opportunities available.

Would you recommend membership to other researchers in the field?

Absolutely! The organization offers unique opportunities for collaboration, professional growth, and staying updated on advancements in dental research and practice.

How do you stay updated on the latest developments and research findings in the field of dentistry?

My primary source of staying updated is through reading relevant journals. However, being part of the National Dental PBRN ensures that I actively participate in studies and contribute to advancements in the field. This provides me with a deeper understanding of the latest developments.

As the immediate past president of the Pennsylvania Dental Association, how do you see your involvement in NDPBRN aligning with your previous leadership roles within the dental community?

Leadership encompasses various forms of involvement and decision-making. Participating in research through National Dental PBRN complements my previous leadership roles by allowing me to engage in collaborative decision-making processes and contribute to advancing dental practice on a broader scale.
